Product Description

In Old Arizona (1928)

Director:

 Irving Cummings

Writers:

 O. Henry (story), Tom Barry (adaptation)

Stars:

Warner Baxter, Edmund Lowe, Dorothy Burgess

Warner Baxter, sporting a black mustache and a musical-comedy Mexican accent, stars as the Cisco Kid, the "Robin Hood of the Old West" created by O. Henry. Edmund Lowe co-stars as Cisco's "friendly enemy" Sgt. Mickey Dunne, the role that was originally to have gone to Raoul Walsh. Both men are madly in love with dusky beauty Tonia Maria (Dorothy Burgess), and in fact Cisco is so "far gone" that he composes a song in the girl's honor (actually, "My Tonia", first heard during the opening credits, was written by Fox studio tunesmithsLew Brown, B.G. DeSylva and Ray Henderson). Alas, Tonia ends up betraying Cisco to Sgt. Burke. But the crafty, cold-blooded Cisco arranges for Tonia to be killed in the trap set for him (this plot resolution is faithful to O. Henry's original conception of the Cisco Kid, who wasn't really meant to be a "good guy").

  1. Boy, Has Acting Changed! 3 Star Review

Posted by on Jul 23rd 2021

I was delighted to get this DVD. I have tried to see all Best Picture winners, as well as all the acting winners, and Warner Baxter's Oscar-winning performance long seemed unattainable. The transfer was really beautiful, as it has been for most Zeus DVDs. But the acting? Good grief! This was only the second Academy Awards, so they were yet as prestigious as they would soon become, but still... This slow-paced performance with the hokey Mexican accent was considered the best of the year? Standards sure have changed. And to think it spawned a slew of sequels!

  2. Good picture quality 4 Star Review

Posted by on May 15th 2017

The picture quality was surprisingly good, and there was some snappy dialog that was enjoyable. Overall an enjoyable movie, and I got to see why Warner Baxter was such a big star, which explained his role in 42nd Street.
