This short 1902 silent film is claimed to be the first science fiction movie (although the science is pretty laughable), a trip to the moon where there is air to breathe and hostile inhabitants. And in color, recently recovered hand-tinted scenes. Who knew? It’s fun to see the early special effects. Supposedly based on Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon,” it also has a smattering of H. G. Wells’ “First Men in the Moon,” and is a fascinating historical artifact.
