Cinderella From The San Francisco Ballet (1985)
Evelyn Cisneros, Jim Henson, Frank Oz
MAGIC effects are scattered throughout ''San Francisco Ballet in 'Cinderella,' '' a ''Dance in America'' holiday special that aired as part of the Great Performances series. A puff of smoke transforms an ancient, ugly hag into a beautiful fairy. The hag disappears up the chimney of a cavernous fireplace in which a fire burns. The fairy flies up and across a night sky. A giant totters about the stage. But the greatest magic of this fairy-tale production, set to the haunting Prokofiev score, is its complete suitability for both adults and children. Directed by Michael Smuin and Emile Ardolino, ''San Francisco Ballet in 'Cinderella' '' is a fine introduction to ballet for the youngest members of the family and offers enough imaginative dancing, well performed, to satisfy the adult balletomane. Toddlers may need a little explanation here and there. But the ballet tells its story clearly, with a minimum of confusing frills. The humor is broad but never veers into slapstick. And Cinderella and her prince are a very attractive and believable pair of teen-aged lovers.

I watched a recorded version of this as a kid, and it's just as good as I remember. It's a beautifully staged ballet, with humor and amazing dancing, plus you get the addition of Miss Piggy and Kermit telling you what's going on.
The only thing that could make it better is a digital remastering. It was pretty clear, relatively speaking, but it's a recording from TV for sure. Still very good, though.

I had this on VHS and loved it. So nice to find it on DVD. The production is wonderful and Evelyn Cisneros is charming as Cinderella. SF Ballet is a high quality company and should not be underestimated in the ballet world.

I have been looking for this ballet for a while. This is considered a classic in my family, and I am transported to my childhood when I watch it. Excellent quality (for 1985 TV!!) and love the 80s "digital mastering".

Was SO pleased to find this on DVD; had taped it off the TV years ago, but the VHS tape wore out. It is a delightful performance, and the two ugly stepsisters nearly steal the show! Great staging, great dancing, and the choreography is clever and makes the most of Prokofiev's music. The quality of the DVD was very good; very clear visually. It is a delight to be able to watch this production again.
