Eine Nacht Im Paradies (1932)
Happy-go-lucky Anny Ondra, the Czechoslovak-German film comedian whose antics have amused New York audiences on several previous occasions, works hard in "Eine Nacht Im Paradies" ("A Night in Paradise").. Although her leading man, the well-known Hermann Thimig, has plenty to do as a wealthy German-American visiting the Fatherland, Fräulein Ondra is the centre of attraction and action in this fluffy Cinderella tale of a little dress shop girl who is forced to play the part of a "grand lady" and who eventually becomes one via the matrimonal route.
Around this trite theme, Carl Lamac, the director, has woven a web of all sorts of funny incidents, mingled with a few entertaining bits of orchestral music and song. This time the fair Anny, who has a way of her own in combining a look of blank ignorance with a hint of slyness, and sometimes of sentiment, is held in restraint by the director. Nevertheless, the more solid Herr Thimig has to move fast in order to keep pace with her partner as the scene shifts from the home of the apparently rich, but in reality poor, Walldorfs, to the dress shop, to Monika's humble quarters, back to the Walldorfs, through a number of cabarets, and to the modernistic furniture store where Monika's father is night watchman and where the gay party winds up.
Technically the film is good and the acting of the players is excellent. Knowledge of German is necessary for full enjoyment of the picture, as there are no English titles.
