This early drama from director Fritz Lang depicts the stock speculator Yquem (Ludwig Hartau), who constantly suspects infidelity of his guiltless and virtuous wife (Carola Trolle). Seeking to purchase a gift for her, he goes to a sleazy criminal hangout and uses counterfeit money to buy jewelry from a dangerous Thief (Rudolph Klein-Rogge). There he spots Werner (Anton Edthofer) who resembles a portrait owned by his wife. Yquem follows Werner to his hotel and leaves a letter inviting him to the Yquems' home. Confronting Werner and his wife, he discovers that she has not seen her old suitor since marrying Yquem. The Thief and his henchman break into the house to burglarize it, and in the ensuing struggle with Werner the henchman's gun discharges, killing Mme. Yquem.
