In this adventure, four explorers search for a vast treasure in the Amazon jungle. One of the explorers is a woman who got involved after she traveled from California to marry her fiance whom she hasn't seen in two years. Another man tries to convince her that her fiance has become an alcoholic idealist obsessed with finding gold in the jungle. Another takes her into the jungle to find her love. En route he falls in love with her. Later they learn that her fiance has been killed by the Jivaro headhunters. The other man, who went in before them is also attacked, but the woman's guide saves his life. This film did not use stock footage. Much of it was actually filmed in the jungle to provide the backgrounds.
Originally filmed in stereoscopic 3-D, due to a decline in interest Jivaro was not presented in that format in its original release. It later had its 3-D debut on September 17, 2006 at The World 3-D Expo in Hollywood.
Publicity material for the film translates Jivaro as "headhunters of the Amazon". In April 1952 Pine-Thomas Productions announced they had bought the novel Morro Treasure by David Duncan and hired Duncan to write the script. The film was known as Lost Treasure of the Amazon. In August John Payne was announced as star as part of a two-picture contract with Pine Thomas, the other being High Voltage. Payne ended up not appearing in the film and High Voltage was never made. Rhonda Fleming and Fernando Lamas were cast in April 1953.
