Lamp At Midnight is a thought-provoking and meaningful drama dealing with three critical periods of Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei's life. In 1609, a young and enthusiastic Galileo built a telescope and began a study of the universe that would bring him into direct conflict with the accepted view of the universe. His construction of the universe was based on the Calpernian concept of the planets revolving around the sun. The official "truth" sanctioned by the Church stated that the sun and planets revolved around a central stationary earth. In 1616 the Holy Office of the Inquisition pronounced Galileo's theory false and he was forbidden to hold or teach it as fact. Galileo continued his researches, however, resulting in his "Dialogue on the Two Systems of the World" published in 1632. Although his view was advanced as a hypothesis, he was ordered to Rome and forced to deny his theory. Even after this, old and in ill-health, his sight failing, Galileo continued to work and wrote many of his most important scientific concepts, concepts that opened the door to a new age for the entire world.
