Murder By The Book (1987)
Robert Hays, Catherine Mary Stewart, Christopher Murney
Mild-mannered mystery writer D. H. Mercer has become so immersed in his material that his creation, hard-boiled private eye Biff Deegan constantly appears to him as a hallucination. Intent on getting rid of Biff, and replacing him with a more civilized detective, Mercer soon finds himself in a genuine mystery involving art fraud, murder, and a beautiful lady in peril.

Robert Hays(of Airplane fame) plays a mystery writer, Hank Mercer, who becomes embroiled in a real life mystery. In setting out to solve it, his fictional detective character-a hard boiled Bogart type called Biff Deegan-appears to him in hallucinations and helps him solve the mystery involving art fraud. there is of course a beautiful damsel in distress played by the lovely Catherine Mary Stewart and an arch baddie played by the always watchable Fred Gwynne o The Munsters fame and Celeste Holm as -Hank's mother. Its a made for TV movie and the ending has the air of a possible sequel that never eventuated. It is an easy to watch enjoyable piece of romantic escapism. RECOMMENDED
