Willie Nelson’s concept album RED HEADED STRANGER is a first-rate example of how a proven artist with a visionary Idea should be left alone to do what he does best: create!
Willie Nelson—love him or hate him—became obsessed with the story of a preacher who shoots his unfaithful wife and her lover then spends the next phase of his life wandering in search of redemption.
The record company Powers That Be were doubtful. Nelson had to fight to make his album his way. After some million or so in sales proved him right, it led to the inevitable—would RED HEADED STRANGER make a good film?
The answer is yes.
Nelson’s face is perfect for Westerns, conveying as much “lived in” believability as an old pair of chaps. Contrast that with Morgan Fairchild’s delicate beauty and you just know things between them can’t last. To the filmmakers’ credit, they don’t rush the story, and Fairchild’s fateful decision is not made lightly. Nelson, whose portrayal of the good reverend is entirely believable, masterfully conveys how his frustration and stress finally boils over in his response to his wife’s infidelity.
For all parties concerned, negative choices, i.e. sin, have their consequences and Nelson is at the forefront of those seeking redemption. The symbolism of the town well, which Nelson helps to dig, despite some stiff opposition, is a powerful reminder of the cleansing purity of the waters of baptism and how to achieve spiritual renewal in the waters of life.
RED HEADED STRANGER is helped immensely by period-sounding dialogue. When you add to the mix Western stalwarts R.G. Armstrong and Royal Dano to speak the authentic language, you know you’re in for a treat. The 1980s were a pretty dry period for Westerns. RED HEADED STRANGER takes the Western fan down to the nearest creek for a good long drink of cool water.
The print of this film (the picture quality) is a solid 9 out of 10, in my opinion. My only suggestion would be, if possible, to add the closed captioning option. This is becoming easier to accomplish with ever-broadening technology. Hard of hearing folks like me appreciate it.
