Sally And Saint Anne (1952)

Sally and Saint Anne (1952) is a dated, but sweet film, assuming you can forgive Sally O’Moyne (Ann Blyth) and her taste in men. At least the O’Moyne family isn’t dysfunctional, but it is entertaining. The movie starts with Sally in her Catholic school losing her lunch box. Eventually she resorts to praying, ala Don Camillo, to St. Anne to help her find it. The lunch box is found quickly and we are given a quick introduction to the movie’s villain, iceman Percival Xavier 'Goldtooth' McCarthy (John McIntire), later a town alderman. The outstanding cast includes “Kris Kringle” Edmund Gwenn as Grandpa Pat Ryan, who is “dying” everyday; the parents, “Aunt Bea” Frances Bavier as Kitty “Mom” O'Moyne and Otto Hulett as Pop O'Moyne; and the boys; “Wyatt Earp” Hugh O'Brian as Danny O'Moyne, “Bart Maverick” Jack Kelly as Mike O'Moyne; and “The Shadow” Lamont Johnson as Willie O'Moyne. The are respectively a punchy fighter, a clever magician, and a composer. The rest of the film involves the shenanigans of the unscrupulous miser McCarty vs the entire O’Moyne family. Have no fear, all turns out okay, except for Grandpa’s tree and I did worry about Mikes’ doves. The cat makes it, however, even through the house move, which allowed the family to maintain electricity and water even when on the road. Perhaps that was St. Anne’s doing, too.

Sweet little story about growing up Catholic in a certain era. It works as well as it does because Sally is such a great character. It's a lot of fun.

Movies about wacky families can be a lot of fun, and this is one. The traditional Catholic background is a bonus, especially for those of us who grew up that way. I have a long enough memory to state that the background is authentic.
This movie is a little gem. It is a shame that it has never been released on home video in any form by the studio. The last time it was on TV (that I know of) was over 25 years ago on AMC. Kudos to Zeus for putting this neglected treasure into circulation.
