Nancy Carroll's popularity enabled her to survive the melodramatic excesses of Stolen Heaven with little if any damage to her career. Carroll plays Mary, the streetwalker sweetheart of born-loser Joe (Phillips Holmes). Engineering a $20,000 robbery, Mary and Joe draw up a pact to spend all the money foolishly and then commit suicide. But as time passes, they decide that they might as well live. Joe confesses to the robbery and willingly marches off to jail, secure in the understanding that Mary will await his return. Louis Calhern makes an excellent first impression as the film's nominal villain, only to completely disappear from view in the final scenes. The 1938 musical drama Stolen Heaven is not a remake.

Love Makes Everything

I just watched this film and was totally mesmerized by it. Melodrama at it's Best! It's wonderful to watch characters that increasingly, it seems, are less and less represented in film or novels anymore. A man, fed up with his life robs his place of employment and ends up being injured in the process. A working street girl picks him up and takes him to her place and looks after him. I won't give away everything, but they plan a rousing party to end all parties before calling this life quits.
I loved this little gem of a film and have watched it a few times since getting it. Give it a try if you'd like to see a really nice drama about characters who don't get the spotlight in films anymore. I don't think you'll regret it.
