Writer-director Luc Besson originally conceived this tale of a mute woman and her dreams of becoming a chorus girl on Broadway. India Rey (Mia Frey) teaches dance to Brooklyn elementary school students by day; by night, she competes in the cutthroat dance contests at her local discotheque. When the dreadlocked dance goddess decides to try out her skills at an audition for a Broadway musical, she impresses the casting directors but is cut from the show, since her speech impediment would require costly translators to be hired. India returns to Brooklyn to drown her sorrows on the dance floor, where a nebbish scientist (Rodney Eastman) finds himself captivated by her moves -- and sets out to create a machine which can convert her motions into words and sounds.
