"The Little Princess" (1939) is Shirley Temple's best film, coming near the end of her reign at 20th Century Fox. She is not "playing cute" here (being about 10 years old). Given a film with real drama and a plot, Shirley proves she is a capable dramatic actress.
Sara Crewe is the prized pupil at Miss Minchin's boarding school in 1899 London. She goes from riches to rags when her father is declared dead in a war. Sara is forced to sleep in the attic, and displays fortitude and a nice spirit of rebellion by refusing to believe her father is dead.
Mary Nash, who played a villainess opposite Temple in "Heidi" (1937), plays a similar role here as the witchy and evil Miss Minchin. Marcia Mae Jones, also in the cast of "Heidi", plays Temple's nemesis her. Frequent Temple co-star Arthur Tretcher is also in the cast.
