Two films out, Frank Capra rebounds from his almost career-ending debacle of Long Pants in this biting and cynical melodrama about honest reporting and corrupt politics. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. plays cub reporter Clem Rogers, who investigates the murder of the city district attorney and discovers that the daughter of a mayoral candidate, Jane Atwill (Jobyna Ralston), was with the district attorney when he was killed. Clem sees this as a chance to make the grade as a reporter and the resulting story that he writes is so sensational that it makes page one of the paper. Jane is arrested, all the while insisting on her innocence, contending that she has no idea who killed the district attorney. With her father's political ambitions ruined, Jane is released from prison on bail. She runs immediately from the jail to the newspaper office and convinces Clem of her innocence. Working together, Clem and Jane try to solve the murder and begin to see a connection between the murder of the district attorney and the political ambitions of her father's political rival.
