Alan Ladd portrays a newspaper reporter who becomes fascinated about a young girl (Donna Reed, in flashbacks) found dead in a rooming house. (This seemingly scarce movie somewhat channels the play and movie, "Laura.") In uncovering more about her life, he runs afoul of some gangsters about whom she had information. It's a good mystery, the only drawback being quality being less than pristine, but it's still plenty good enough to enjoy.

One of the lesser known Alan Ladd films which I've ordered for a friend who lives in Germany. Even though we watch TCM since 2007, this crime movie was never shown on TCM.
It's a good film noir about a reporter (Ladd) and reminded me a bit of "Call Northside 777" (James Stewart).
Arthur Kennedy, Donna Reed, June Havoc and Shepperd Strudwick (the victim in "The Restless Moment" with James Mason and Joan Bennett) play the other lead roles with Margaret Field aka Maggie Mahoney as Minerva (Sally Field's mom).
The picture and sound quality of the DVD is excellent!
Very recommendable.

this is a movie I've owned in 16mm film for over 30 years and I have been looking for the dvd that is just as clear as the film without success until now. Although not quite as good as film this is the best copy I've seen and would recommend it as a keeper. A good movie and one of the best Alan Ladd / Donna Reed films from the 1940's
