Frau Sylvelin (1938)
Herbert Maisch
The, in this case, calm beauty and subdued romantic passion of Maria Tasnady, a capable Hungarian actress in the service of the UFA picture concern, furnish welcome relief from the sometimes serious, sometimes "playful" ravings and rantings of burly Heinrich George in "Frau Sylvelin."
There is nothing especially new in the scenario. The charming second wife of an uncouth, domineering big business man responds to the advances of a good-looking Austrian nobleman (Paul Richter), the object of the matrimonial intentions of her pretty young stepdaughter (Carla Rust). When her husband learns what is going on he belatedly realizes how much she means to him. Write your own ticket.
It may be the fault of Director Herbert Maisch that Herr George, one of Germany's best players, is so disagreeable in the early sequences that the spectators are likely to have little feeling for him when he tries to be half-way decent at the end.
