Three friends struggle to make their way through a world blighted by a man-made catastrophe in this experimental drama from Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz. Alberta, Julian and Rina are three leftist activists whose worst fears about the future have become a reality when a skirmish leads to a global apocalypse. As the three wander the desolate countryside, each has a different perspective -- Alberta searches for some sign of her husband, Julian is haunted by memories of the women he loves, and Rina has fallen into a deep depression. As the three friends wrestle with grief, loss and confusion, they began to exchange personalities and take on the attitudes of other people, sometimes drifting into a curious sort of gamesmanship. The three begin to lose their grip on reality as military factions battle for control of what's left of the world. Starring Perry Dizon, Angeli Bayani and Roeder Camanag and running over seven hours, Melancholia was a major prizewinner at the 2008 Venice Film Festival, with Diaz taking home the trophy for Best Film in the Horizons program.
