Murder by Death (1976) is an hilarious detective spoof by Neil Simon. Maybe all you need to know is the cast. The wealthy eccentric Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) invites the world’s best detectives for the weekend. His staff includes Bensonmum (Alec Guinness), the Maid (Nancy Walker), and the Screaming Door Bell (Fay Wray). The guests include Sam Diamond (Peter Falk) and his “secretary” Tess Skeffington (Eileen Brennan); Sidney Wang (Peter Sellers) and his adopted son Willie Wang (Richard Narita); Milo Perrier (James Coco) and his chauffeur/secretary Marcel (James Cromwell); Jessica Marbles (Elsa Lanchester) and her nurse of 52 years (Estelle Winwood); Dick Charleston (David Niven), his wife Dora Charleston (Dame Maggie Smith), and Myron the Dog (Myron). Of course, one must put up with some dated inappropriate humor, particularly towards the Wangs. Twain’s plan is to determine the world’s best detective, and he will do that by isolating the ten guests, murder one of the house mates, and expecting one of the detective to solve the murder. Very funny movie, even if you don’t have any interest or knowledge of some of the “real” characters.
