During the late 1930's and early 1940's, trio-westerns such as the Three Mesquiteers were very popular. Usually, there were two handsome leading men and one for comic relief. "Rangers of Fortune" 1940, stars Fred MacMurray and Gilbert Roland as what else, the handsome leading men, and Albert Dekker as the comic relief. The villain is ably played by Joseph Schildkraut. The movie is very well acted and there are some twists and turns in the plot that will shock you for sure. The film includes Patricia Morrison as the romantic lead and Dick Foran as the other guy. The surprise for me was Albert Dekker who played the comic relief as a punchy ex-boxer ala Maxie Rosenblum. He is worth the price of admission as they used to say.
As I have with many hidden gems, I found this on Zeus and took a chance. I was glad that I did. While it is formulaic with MacMurray and Roland vying for the affections of Patricia Morrison as they simultaneously fight the bad guys, it is well acted throughout and well worth a watch. Through the years I have found many movies on Zeus that I had not heard of before and am generally glad that I did. I can heartily recommend "Rangers of Fortune" and while you're at it, checkout out some of the other movies listed there. You will not be sorry. You will find many entertaining films, you never knew existed, that will never make their way to any of the known movie channels.
