The Silk Hat Kid is Lew Ayres, a babyfaced gangland "torpedo." Circumstances force the Kid to hole up in a slum settlement house, where priest William Harrigan puts him to work as a boxing instructor. The Kid begins to reform, and falls in love with tenement girl Mae Clarke. When rival Paul Kelly shows up, the Kid has the urge to kill, but Father Harrigan orders the two men to settle their differences in the ring. The Silk Hat Kid is handicapped by the miscast Lew Ayres, but it serves as an interesting precursor to theDead End Kids school of filmmaking which became popular towards the end of the '30s.

Forgotten Feel Good Movie

I love old movies! Let me state that up front! And one of my greatest pleasures is finding one that I never heard of before. Such was the case with the "Silk Hat Kid" 1935, with Lew Ayres and Mae Clarke. It starts out with Ayres as a tough guy boxer hired as a bodyguard and then morphs into a feel good movie about a tough guy boxer who becomes a mentor to young boys who need a father figure in their lives. Ayres is surprisingly believable as the tough guy boxer and of course always believable as the nice guy. This time helping out kids with the aid of Mae Clarke. Though not a great movie, it is a very good movie and well worth your time. And my go to place for movies like this is Zeus! They have movies even most old movie buffs never heard of! I never tire of finding undiscovered gems on their website. If you are an old movie buff looking for lost treasure, then Zeus is the place check out. Happy hunting!
