Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937)

One of the most groundbreaking films in cinematic history, this was Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature. Three years in the making, it was derided in Hollywood as "Disney's Folly." Animated short subjects with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, The Three Little Pigs, etc. were one thing. Conventional wisdom held that nobody would sit still for a full-length animated feature that ran close to 90 minutes. Perhaps this is why the Disney Animation staff employed a soft pastel, watercolor style. The animation is detailed, but it is never a strain on the eyes.
"Disney's Folly" was perhaps more accurately "Disney's Greatest Gamble". Had "Snow White" failed, the Disney company would have come crashing down, and we would never have had the later Disney animated musical renaissance of "The Little Mermaid" (1989) and "Beauty And The Beast" (1991).
Instead, Disney had the last laugh, and he probably laughed all the way to the bank. Today's massive Disney Empire was founded on the success of "Snow White" (1937).
Walt Disney was a control freak and a genius. "Snow White" is a lot of things in one innovative package. This first full-length animated feature was also Hollywood's first integrated musical. All of the songs tell you something about the characters and propel the plot forward.
Disney is a master storyteller here; keeping the pace tight and the emotions high. The film runs a very tight and swift 84 minutes. You really feel for the sweet Princess Snow White (voiced by soprano Adrianne Caselotti), who can't comprehend the pure Evil of her evil Stepmother, the Queen.
She is, of course, befriended by The Seven Dwarfs (Doc, Happy, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, and Dopey), who provide friendship, shelter, and comic relief.
Most importantly, Disney begins the grand tradition of scene-stealing villains with The Evil Queen. The film really kicks into high gear when she drinks a magical potion; transforming into her true self: The Wicked Witch. She concocts a poisoned apple to kill Snow White. She gets what she deserves, however. As she tries to kill the Seven Dwarfs during a thunderstorm, the old hag is struck by lightening and falls off a cliff to her death. Classic, indeed!!
