The Company's In Love (1932)
Max Ophüls

Max Ophüls' first film. This is a clue as to why he became world famous.... the first 2/3 of the film shows the members of a film company entranced by a new discovery. This is really excellent. The rhythm of the interactions of the players is something one rarely sees nowadays. Ophüls is in control, and it is a joy to watch. The conclusion drifts into clichè, but since the beginning and middle were as good as they were, it hardly matters. Quite enjoyable work from a first class director.
