Norman Jewison's 1963 comedy about the randomness of fame and celebrity became the seeming inspiration for John Water's "Serial Mom," 31 years later. Both feature a housewife of a medical professional, but where Doris Day stumbles into fame as a soap spokesperson, Kathleen Turner becomes a symbol of modern mass murder, in Water's parallel comedy.
