The hyped-up 1930s radio feud between bandleader Ben Bernie and columnist Walter Winchell is all but forgotten today, but that doesn't lessen the entertainment value of the Bernie/Winchell vehicle Wake Up and Live. Amidst the bickering of the two stars, the film traces the progress of mike-shy singer Jack Haley (whose singing voice was dubbed by Buddy Clark). Leading lady Alice Faye tricks Haley into singing on the air with Bernie's orchestra, which results in Winchell doing his best to discredit both Bernie and Haley. Eventually Haley and Alice Faye fall in love, and Ben and Walter patch up their differences. So successful was Wake Up and Live that 20th Century-Fox rushed Bernie and Winchell into a follow-up, Love and Hisses (38), but by that time their feud had taken second place in the hearts of America to the equally contrived "battle" betweenJack Benny and Fred Allen.

  1. very slight Fox musical 3 Star Review

Posted by on Jul 8th 2023

You really have to like Jack Haley, (listed below the title) in order to enjoy this film. Haley, for those who remember, had his best role in film, as the "Tin Woodsman", in the classic, "The Wizard of Oz." Haley plays a singer with a beautiful singing voice, (Haley carries most of the score in the film, although his real singing voice is dubbed throughout the film) who is geared to be a radio star. The only problem is, is that he suffers from "mike fright", and is unable to sing in front of a microphone. The main plot, however, involves the feud between radio reporter
Walter Winchell, and bandleader, Ben Bernie. This feud was, indeed, true, but it will mean nothing to anybody today. Only highlight, as far as this viewer is concerned, is Alice Faye, introducing the beautiful ballad, "There's a Lull In My Life".
