Zoo In Budapest (1933)

This "naturalistic" romance set in a zoo is a delight, and the ending is just mindblowing. The zoo animals are integral characters, not just eye candy. Highly recommended.

Reputedly this long-thought-lost film only exists on 16mm.
It looks pretty good here, considering. Not sure dp Lee Garmes would think so though.

With cinematography supervised by Lee Garmes and adroit editing by Harold Schuster, ZOO IN BUDAPEST is a neglected cinema gem. Acting and screenplay are unexceptional, and sound a bit less than perfect, but the animal closeups, zoo ambience and enormous dramatic suspense of the climax make this film a must-see for admirers of mobile, versatile camerawork.
